Last week we learned about Emu Oil and made a lotion. This week we’re still looking at Emu Oil in formulations.
Today I have a salve planned featuring Emu Oil.
Salves are super simple to make, but there are a few rules to follow to be a success. You need to have hard oils as well as liquid oils, and it’s helpful to add just a bit of beeswax to get the consistency right.
I’m keeping this formula super simple to really highlight the Emu Oil. I’ll add some Shea Butter to give the right texture, plus a little Aloe Extract to really boost the benefits to the skin
With Emu Oil’s reputation as being great for skin issues, I think this salve will be a wonderful addition to my winter skin care lineup. Joining me in the workroom today? I hope so!

Formula
55% Emu Oil
10% Beeswax
30% Shea Butter
5% Aloe Extract
25-gram Test Batch13.8 grams Emu Oil |
12-ounce Batch6.6 ounces Emu Oil |
Instructions
Weigh Emu Oil, Beeswax, and Shea Butter in a microwave-safe container. Heat using short time bursts and stirring after every heating until all the oils have melted fully. The Beeswax will be the last to melt and can usually be melted by stirring once all the other oils have melted.
Add the Aloe Extract and stir well.
Pour salve into tins and allow to cool before adding the lids and labels. Enjoy!
Notes
The test batch filled one of our 0.75 oz Screw Top Tins all the way to the rim. I guess I could have made a larger test batch and filled three of the tins about 2/3 of the way full.
This salve is really oily, which makes it kind of a mess to use. I put about a pencil eraser size amount on my forearm, and it has taken about 10 minutes for it to soak in. I’d recommend using it sparingly on small areas of skin or using it when you can allow it to just sit and absorb. I’m thinking of trying it on my feet at night with some cotton socks to keep the salve on my feet and off my sheets.
