The Dual Color Lip Balm!

The Dual Color Lip Balm!

You probably looked at that and instantly thought, “Wow! That is so cool! I bet it required a fancy tool to make it.” I promise that it is much easier than it looks and you will impress every person who opens a tube of this lip balm. To make this tutorial easier, I’m using the Shea Butter Lip Solutions and the Big Lip Balm Tube. Feel free to use your favorite lip balm recipe and your favorite container!

How did I make this lip balm have two colors? I used a really simple tool that can be found at many places. It’s a common drinking straw! (Unused of course.) Let’s go have some fun making dual color lip balms and I’ll show you how a straw makes this amazing lip balm.

I highly recommend a scale and time to make an initial test tube if you are using a different lip balm recipe, container or straw. Each item can impact the difference in your amounts needed to for the two colors of lip balm. The tubes and straws that I’m using needed 7 grams of the lip balm for the exterior color and 1.5 grams of the lip balm for the interior color. I did the rest of my calculations based on these numbers.

Colored and flavored lip balm.

Let’s start by cutting the drinking straws to a length of 3.5 to 4 inches. The goal is to have the straw stick out of the tube about an inch so it will make easy removal of the straw later. I’m not worried about being exact because I’m not giving the straws away! Set the straws aside and load the filling tray with the tubes.

A small amount of lip balm is at the bottom of each tube.

Melt the Shea Butter Lip Solutions and weigh 140 grams (4.94 ounces) into a microwave safe container. Add Blackberry Pomegranate, Sugar Baby and Ruby Lip Balm Color. Once the flavors and color have been added and mixed completely, add 0.5 mL to the bottom of each tube. We just need enough in the bottom so the straw can be pushed into the cooling lip balm and act like it is sealed. This keeps the center of our lip balm empty for the first round.

Once all the straws have been placed, gently pour the lip balm into the tubes around the outside of the straws. Allow the pink lip balm to cool completely. I usually let the lip balms sit for 5 to 10 minutes to cool. If the straws are removed prematurely, it will be difficult to get that gorgeous dual color lip balm.

While the pink colored lip balm is cooling, melt the Shea Butter Lip Solutions and weigh 30 grams (1.06 ounces) into another microwave safe container. Add Buttercream, Sugar Baby and White Lip Balm Color.

Gently remove the straws from the lip balm tubes. If you have a set of pliers on hand, this can help grasp the slick plastic of the straw and easily remove. It does help to twist as you pull up so you don’t pull the pink exterior up at the same time. Don’t worry about any nicks on the top!

You may need to reheat your center lip balm because you want it to be well heated. It needs to bond to the pink exterior and the screw in the center so the whole lip balm will move as one piece.

Filling the center holes with lip balm.

Using a transfer pipette, fill the centers of each lip balm. Since I’m using a tray, I’m not worried about filling the centers perfectly. Once the centers have cooled completely, I’ll scrape off the excess lip balm and then the tops will be beautifully smooth! Any extra lip balm from scraping the tray or left in my beakers will get turned into a mixed flavor lip balm and I’ll give it away for Valentines Day favors.

Remove the tubes from the trays and cap. A little twist of the whole tube will keep the edges of your lip balm smooth. If you have any jagged edges, quickly wave a heat gun over the lip balms to smooth out the edges. It will only take 1-3 seconds! You might melt the tops of your dual color lip balms and the colors will mix if the heat is kept on too long.

About Andee

Director of Happiness. I'm a thirty-something soap snob. I've grown up with handmade soaps, and I love them! I really like making lotions, soaps, and perfumes. I adore mixing scents to come up with something new. My favorite scent is either Wicked or Cotton Candy. I tend to hoard fragrances, I even have an Earl Grey Tea from the MMS catalog. I won't tell you how old it is, but it sure is good!
