An Aftershave Lotion and An After Shower Body Lotion with Ingredients from the Cupboards of Neal and Dani 3

I only have a few more recipes to share and I think I’ll have tackled all of the requests I received from readers responding to the Quick Gifts from Your Cupboard blog post. I am excited to announce that we will continue the “From Your Cupboard” series each month. We will put out a blog post each month and then come up with formulas for anyone who asks! Now on to the formulas for the day!

Neal e-mailed in asking for help formulating an aftershave lotion for men. After he answered a few questions for me, I was able to create this light lotion for him. He had requested that I include Sea Buckthorn Oil due to many good things he had heard about the oil from friends, including stories about the Russian Cosmonaut program using it to help treat radiation burns. I think you will enjoy this formula!

64% Water
14% Jojoba, Golden or Colorless
7% Veggie Emulsifier
5% Macadamia Nut Oil
5% Cyclomethicone (Gives the lotion a conditioning feel and smooth glide during application.)
3% Liquid Glycerin (Can be replaced with longer lasting humectants like Sodium Lactate or Hydrovance
1% Seabuckthorn Fruit Oil
0.5% Liquid Germall Plus
0.5% Allantoin

Dani asked for a simple lotion that could be used as a daily after shower lotion. This lotion will be a fantastic way to pamper oneself after each shower!

75% water
18% Apricot Kernel Oil
3% Liquid Glycerin
3% Emulsifying Wax
0.5% Liquid Germall Plus
0.5% Fragrance or Essential Oil of Choice

I only have three more posts for this week and then we will move to some really fun projects next week!

About Andee

Director of Happiness. I'm a thirty-something soap snob. I've grown up with handmade soaps, and I love them! I really like making lotions, soaps, and perfumes. I adore mixing scents to come up with something new. My favorite scent is either Wicked or Cotton Candy. I tend to hoard fragrances, I even have an Earl Grey Tea from the MMS catalog. I won't tell you how old it is, but it sure is good!

Excellent suggestions! I will try this very soon. I have three questions before I start working on this project. How would I thicken this formula? Should I use the lotion making instructions provided on the blog? Is there an advantage to using the microwave instructions provided in this blog over the standard heat and hold instructions that other sites suggest?

Yes, I recommend using the lotion making instructions found here on our blog. The advantage is that it is easier and takes less time. I haven’t found any evidence yet that leads me to a firm position about the heat and hold method. If the recipe isn’t thick enough for you, try decreasing the water and adding Stearic Acid to the formula (no more than 4%). If it still isn’t thick enough, let me know and I’ll help you adjust the recipe for a thicker formula.
