Yesterday I shared one of the recipes I have been using to give to friends that I run into as I explore the city of Beijing. However, I flavored the entire batch with Rose. I find that there are some who don’t want the floral rose as a flavor. So I decided to make another lip balm with a slightly different formulation for them. Come join me for this other recipe!
I wasn’t looking for something that would be as glossy or creamy. I wanted more of a work horse formulation. I wanted something that would be more acceptable among men. Men don’t look for a creamy, smooth gliding and shiny lip balm. They want something helps prevent chapped lips. I think this is perfect for that! I wasn’t worried so much about color and I find Beeswax is a more available in my own cupboard. Based on your needs, you can use Soy Wax, Calendula or even Carnauba Wax. I personally prefer beeswax. Perhaps it reminds me of my father and the smell of him when he came in from tending the beehives. I also used Babassu Oil in this recipe. It is very smooth and creamy. Also it adds a softness and silkiness to the finished product. It is perfect because it balances the world of luxury oils and the world of economical oils. I love it when awesome oils such as this are at an affordable price! I also used Rice Bran Oil. Rice Bran is a lighter oil which helps the lip balm from feeling heavy or greasy. Perfect for a workhorse lip balm. What oils would you use? I also added a small amount of Menthol Crystals. Menthol Crystals add a cooling and tingling sensation to the lips. I have many people ask me for a strong mint flavored lip balm. I find adding a small amount of menthol crystals to a lip balm with peppermint makes them happy without worrying about exceeding the usage rate of the Peppermint Essential Oil.
Recipe:
Weigh everything except Sugar Baby Flavor Oil, Peppermint Essential Oil and Blue Lip Balm in a microwave safe container. Heat everything gently until it is crystal clear. Add the Sugar Baby Flavor Oil, Peppermint Essential Oil and Blue Lip Balm. I used a toothpick to add the Blue Lip Color. With this ingredient, a toothpick amount is all you need. A little goes a long way. Stir well. Pour into containers and allow to cool. Label and enjoy!

I like this one too. Is this a more matte finish. I’ve had a request for a lip balm that is not shiny. The person doesn’t want to look like they put lip balm on. If not, how would I make a balm with a matte finish, but still softening?
This lip balm has a matte like finish. A higher percentage of butters like Shea Butter or Mango Butter will help maintain a matte finish. The Simple Shea Butter Lip Balm is an excellent example of a matte lip balm recipe that contains some oils that could cause a shiny finish. A high percentage of Castor Oil will add a shiny finish but as long as you stay under 10%, you should find a nice lip balm!
I hope this helps!
I’m so glad you posted this. I’ve been curious about the menthol crystals and using them in a lip balm, but hadn’t checked into it yet. I will be adding them to my next order so I can try them out. Thanks!
You will love menthol crystals if you like mint lip balms!
I don’t know why, but I never think to add menthol crystals to my peppermint flavored lip balms! What a novel idea 😉 I must try this the next time I whip up a batch!
You will love it!
I just added Babassu to my cupboard so I am delighted to learn another thing I can do with it 🙂
I’m really enjoying using Babassu in my lip balms!
Definitely going to try this! Been looking for a lip balm my husband will love and this one sounds perfect.
I’m having trouble with my menthol crystals separating when I make the lip balm. Any advice?
Try reserving some liquid oil and melting the two together. Then add to your whole mixture. Menthol is potent, a little goes a long way.
how can i get a tester i love burts menthol feel but not enough
This lip balm was made several years ago. We don’t have any testers of this anymore. I do think that most mint and menthol items are over used and are more damaging to the lips than they are helpful. Please use this material lightly.
