Today we were testing a fragrance oil and it got so hot that the soap overflowed the mold! Since we are firm believers of the adage, “A picture is worth 1000 words,” I had to get a picture to show you what happens when a fragrance is not compatible with our Cold Process Testing. I showed several pictures of soaps back in the January post, Fragrance Testing at MMS. This batch we made today can be added to our failed soaps pile!
Can you see that the mold was warped by the excessive heat? This soap got hot so fast we had a hard time holding the beaker to pour the soap into the mold. Unfortunately, pour isn’t a great descriptor as the soap glopped into the mold rather than pour in the fashion I’ve shown you before. Aren’t you glad this happened in our testing rather than your production? |
wow wow wow So, what was the fragrance that you were testing? Did you know it was going all wrong before you started pouring into the mold???
(again) wow wow wow wow
did the heat of the soap damage the surface around your mold too? I always put newspaper down around the mold I am pouring into, but after seeing this, I am thinking maybe I need to have something like a old piece of plywood so I don’t ruin the kitchen counter!!!!! Emily.
Emily,
I wish I could tell you, but this is a top secret project and if I share the fragrance before it has been approved and released, I may just loose my pass into the R & D lab. I will guarantee that when we fix this fragrance and we are able to release it, you will jump up and down with excitement! (Or at least someone will!) Fortunately, the heat/raw soap didn’t damage the table the mold was on. This table has seen so much abuse that I doubt anything would harm it. If you are concerned, you are welcome to use a piece of plywood or sheet of thick plastic for under your soaps. I would personally use a sheet of plastic so I can wash it if I do have a spill.
I’m sorry I’m not so much help, but I’m having a hard time keeping this one secret!
no problem about the secret part, that makes sense now to why you didn’t mention it in the post. good luck. what fun. emily
