Well today I’m back at it. I’m going to try and tackle another area in my home that is highly neglected. Yes, it is the OVEN! I have been procrastinating when it comes to the oven and I’ll tell you it is mainly because I really do not want to use the smelly, extreme chemical oven cleaners that are available at the store. I am also very aware that my oven has it’s own cleaning setting and that I could push a few buttons and let it go. But, (insert any excuse here) I like to postpone this task during the summer because in my head I do not want to make the house any hotter than it already can be. Good excuse, huh? Or, maybe that is why I don’t cook with this appliance as often as I should; it will make the house hot.
Any way I am working my way around my home trying to make my cleaning chores a bit easier on myself, so why not check the oven off my list. After looking around the house and trying to find some supplies that I have on hand that will be easier on my nose and this is my simple recipe what I have come up with.
Oven Safe Cleaner:
Baking Soda
Water
Coat the inside of your dirty appliance with a paste made from baking soda and water. Let stand overnight. Then scour off with a non-scratch cleaning pad and wipe with a moist cloth. A pan of water left in the over overnight will also help keep the cruds in a more moistened state.
If your appliance is stainless steel and you are in need of an easy way to polish it up. Try using Jojoba Oil or Fractionated Coconut Oil on a soft cloth and wipe the surface, a great way to clean stainless steel and keep it looking great.
How easy is that? Maybe I shouldn’t be so afraid of this appliance and just get in there and use it, and yes, clean up after using it. I even did the extra step and pulled the appliance out and cleaned all around it. The stove is spotless as well and looks brand new. This baking soda paste is fabulous! So next time I go to the store I’ll stock up on baking soda instead of chemical sprays.

The only thing worse than cleaning the oven is cleaning the bathtub – ugh, my back! I use your ingredients (baking soda/water paste) then I add a squirt of the cheapest, and I mean the cheapest hair conditioner you can find. Like the ones that cost under a dollar! Just wipe the tub and tiles with this paste then wipe it down maybe 20-30 minutes later – works like a charm. Just make sure you use a scent (from the hair conditioner) that you like!
