The Importance of Being Prepared 1

Life likes to throw us a curve ball every once in a while and it is tough to be prepared for all of the little things that happen that can throw a wrench in your day. Allow me to give you an example.

Today, I came into work, planning on releasing a blog for a light spring lotion. Circumstances had it that the camera we use for taking photos here in the blog kitchen wasn’t here! Whoops!

Things like this happen to all of us. Our tools are in the sink needing to be cleaned, we don’t have enough containers, we ran out a a certain oil for our soap or lotion and our order won’t be arriving for two more days or an error in our math has given us 3.89 gallons of lotion! (Do you remember that?) So how do we deal with things when catastrophe strikes? We improvise.

If our tools need cleaning, we clean them. If we don’t have enough of one container, let’s check to see if we have another style on hand. If we don’t have a certain oil, ask “Does this absolutely need to be made today?” If no, wait. If yes, check what oils you have locally or make a special one time run of that lotion or soap. (Take notes. Someone will want you to make that again!) Or what if a math error resulted in 3.89 gallons of lotion? Pull out all of your fragrances and scent in small batches. Sell, give away or donate. (Personally I don’t think I want to brag to my grandchildren that I “made that lotion in 2012”!) Schools and health care homes are great places to take those safe to use but cosmetically-challenged bars of soap, or even that 3.89 gallons of lotion if you don’t have an avenue to sell it.

What are some of the curve balls life has thrown at you recently and how did you improvise? I want to hear!

Apricot Kernel Oil is a base oil in several of my soap recipes… In midst of measuring everything else… yep I ran out of Apricot Kernel oil….. quick what do I have on hand Rice Bran oil. Substituted it, recalculated and in my recipes it did not even change the amount of Lye needed. Whew! Benefit of the imrovising, the rice bran added big fluffly bubbles to my soap. Now Rice bran has became a staple in my collection.
