Skunked – A Dog Owner’s Story

Our black and white visitor was very fragrant!

Our black and white visitor was very fragrant!

I asked for your stories about being skunked. Here is my story. My beautiful Gracie recently met her first black and white striped kitty. The kitties are also known as skunks. Poor Gracie! She had no idea what she was getting into! She thought it was a smaller kitty that needed to be herded back to the house and barn. She was so intent on her job of resident mama, she didn’t hear me calling or whistling. Well, this juvenile skunk didn’t like being herded around like an errant child. (Just like a teenager.) It raised its tail and sprayed Gracie right in the face! (The skunk has since been dubbed Flower, just like the skunk in Bambie.)

Now, I must tell you that Gracie loves being beautiful. She loves being groomed and adores bows above her ears but she does NOT like bath time. Poor Gracie submitted to her bath like a champ. After half a bottle of dish soap and a lot of baking soda, she is smelling much better but enough of the skunky aroma has lingered to cause her to mope and pout. To keep her fur from matting and cover some of the aroma, I made a quick bottle of Poodle Poof. It is scented with a blend Andee likes to call Rooibos Dream. It is sweet and ladylike  and has helped put some spring back into Gracie’s step.

Gracie happy with the results of her bath.

Use this to scent you or your beloved pooch while detangling for a beautiful, spa fresh appearance.

Weighing all ingredients into beaker

Weighing all ingredients into beaker

Weigh everything into a large mixing container. I like to weigh out my citric first then the rest of my water soluble ingredients. It makes it much easier to ensure it has completely dissolved. Using an immersion blender, mix well.

One thing I have learned that helps prevent separation is to weigh everything except the water into your mixing vessel. Add only part of your water, just enough to cover the bell of your immersion blender. Blend until it won’t separate. Add the rest of the water, mixing well.

Be forewarned that you may still have a little oil that does not mix in. During my experiments I discovered that if I increased my emulsifier, it made the hair heavy, limp and greasy looking. I decided that a lower usage rate and needing to shake each time I used the product was a far better alternative to having it make the hair heavy.

Directions for use: Shake bottle prior to spritzing. Product can be applied to damp or dry hair. Spritz the hair lightly. Brush or comb the product through. If additional product is needed, spritz the hair again. Style as desired.

Tadaa! That was easy and the results are simple magical! And the best part? Gracie is back to prancing and showing off her beautiful fur. And I don’t think she will try herding black and white kitties named Flower any time soon.
