I have made a few whipped body butters but I can find formulating them a little difficult. Too many soft oils and it deflates faster than a souffle. Adding items like beeswax and stearic acid can help keep those gorgeous peaks but can also leave a heavy, waxy feeling on the skin. Today I want to try something that would stay fluffy and yet would melt nicely on the skin. Today’s recipe does both of these things, however, there is a bit of a caveat. IF left in a hot car, warm house or pocket, this body butter will deflate like the afore mentioned souffle. Keeping it in a cool area will help keep those lofty peaks and firm texture. WAHOO!

When I first tried this recipe on my skin it was late in the afternoon. I had spent some time outside and our ultra low humidity had left my skin dry and flaky. Initially this body butter seemed too heavy and greasy. Fast forward an hour: I have spent several minutes elbows deep in bubbles from doing some dishes. My skin was far more hydrated than when I had first tried the body butter. As I passed by my test batch of whipped body butter, a voice in my head urged me to try it again and give it a second chance.

I like it much better the second time I tried this recipe. It seemed less greasy and more light. It did a really good job at keeping the moisture in my skin. At the end of the day, I was really happy with how my skin felt. I didn’t feel like my nightly ritual of applying a body lotion was required, just merely a good idea. And the best part? Not only does this look like frosting, but it smells like it too! (I can’t tell you how many disappointed people I had to send away from the blog kitchen. Too many!)

Note: In this recipe, Q.S. stands for quantity sufficient. This means that the amount used is just TOO small to measure. I took a wooden toothpick and quickly dipped my toothpick into the bottle of Rose Otto. I then swirled that toothpick briefly in the melted oils. That is it! Tiny, huh?

 

Weigh all of the ingredients except the Orchid Extract, Natural Vanilla Oil and Rose Otto into a microwave safe container. Heat gently until everything is liquid. While everything is still liquid, add the Orchid Extract, Natural Vanilla Oil and Rose Otto to the liquid oils. Allow the mixture to cool. When the mixture is beginning to be become hazy, you will want to stir in regular intervals. I stirred my mixture every 5 – 10 minutes. As the mixture starts to become solid, you will want to start slowly whipping the mixture. I really like to use a stand mixer if possible because it is easier than a hand held device. Choose whichever method is most convenient for you.

When your mixture starts making peaks, you are very close to being finished. It will still be slightly warm at this stage. This is a GOOD thing. The slight amount of heat allows you to package it easily. Scoop or pipe the body butter into jars. Cap and allow to fully cool. Label and enjoy!
