You only thought we were done with Emu Oil! I liked the Emu Oil Salve so much, I decided to turn it into a lip balm. (I had already tried the salve on my lips and found it to be marvelous!)
To make a lip balm out of a salve, I’ll need to increase the amount of beeswax to about 20% and add some brittle at room temperature oils. This particular salve already has plenty of Emu Oil, which is liquid at room temperature. I’ll take a bit of that amount and make it a brittle oil to firm up the lip balm.
The salve had 55% Emu Oil, 10% Beeswax, 30% Shea Butter, and 5% Aloe Extract. My new formula will double the Beeswax, drop back the Emu Oil and Shea Butter, and add some brittle at room temperature oils like Cocoa Butter or Palm Kernel Oil. I’ll also keep the Aloe Extract as part of the liquid oils and add some flavor oil.
Join me in the workroom to see how this turns out!
What You’ll Need
25-gram Text Batch
5 grams Beeswax
Weigh all ingredients but the Aloe Extract and Buttercream Flavor Oil into a microwave-safe container. Heat using short time bursts until all oils are melted. Stir after each heating. The beeswax will be the last to melt, and stirring will help it melt without excessive heating.
Once all oils are melted, add the Aloe Extract and Buttercream Flavor Oil. Stir well.
Using a transfer pipette, fill each lip balm tube. Alternately, you can use one of our Lip Balm Filling Trays if you’re making a big batch. They are awesome for that!
Allow the lip balm to cool completely before adding labels and lids to the lip balm tubes. Enjoy your new lip balm!
Yum! Buttercream may be my favorite of our flavor oils. I really have a hard time not licking my lips after applying a balm flavored with Buttercream!
The lip balm came out very nice. Not overly firm, but firm enough. It’s a good choice for winter with the Emu Oil giving that boost of moisturizing and protection against the elements. I’ve coated my chapped lips several times in the making of this balm, and I can say it’s making me smile without reservation. I may even be able to lick my lips outside at our -20ºF temperatures and not have instant dry lips!
The 25-gram test batch filled 6 lip balm tubes. That’s plenty for my purposes.
I hope you’ll give Emu Oil a try in different formulations like this lip balm!
