Bottoms Up Day 4

Here I am changing my recipe, yet again, to get the product that I want. Remember that you should never have to settle for anything! If you try a recipe and you like the basic ingredients but the viscosity, color, or texture isn’t quite what you wanted, change it! Today I am going to increase Lanolin up to 7% instead of 5%. This will make a more viscous mixture but how viscous I am not sure. I also want to lighten the color by reducing the Seabuckthorn Fruit Oil to 1%. Let’s see how this formula turns out!

Ingredients
HMP Shea Butter
Aloe Butter
Cherry Oil
Soy Wax
Anhydrous Lanolin
Seabuckthorn Fruit Oil
Calendula Extract
Equipment
Scale
Microwave Safe Container
Spoons
Pipettes

Recipe: Yields 100 grams or 3.53 ounces.

Recipe in Grams
32 grams HMP Shea Butter
30 grams Aloe Butter
10 grams Cherry Oil
10 grams Soy Wax
7 grams Anhydrous Lanolin
1 gram Seabuckthorn Fruit Oil
10 grams Calendula Extract
Recipe in Ounces
1.13 ounces HMP Shea Butter
1.06 ounces Aloe Butter
0.35 ounces Cherry Oil
0.35 ounces Soy Wax
0.25 ounces Anhydrous Lanolin
0.04 ounces Seabuckthorn Fruit Oil
0.35 ounces Calendula Extract
Recipe in Percentages
32% HMP Shea Butter
30% Aloe Butter
10% Cherry Oil
10% Soy Wax
7% Anhydrous Lanolin
1% Seabuckthorn Fruit Oil
10% Calendula Extract

Instructions
Carefully weigh all ingredients in a microwave-safe container except for the Calendula Extract. Microwave in short bursts (30-45 seconds), stirring in between, until Soy Wax is thoroughly melted. The mixture will be extremely hot and be a brilliant orange color. When the mixture is cooled and before it has started to become hazy, stir in the Calendula Extract. Pour immediately into jars or bottles. Cap and let sit overnight.

Day 4 turned out well. I am getting closer to my goal with the product. I liked the result of the lighter orange color. It is perfect! I don’t need to mess with that anymore. The Lanolin did end up making a thicker, more viscous ointment and I am worried that it is more difficult to apply to sensitive baby skin. I think that today’s formula would make a great foot balm though! It has a nice rub in time on the skin and it is extremely moisturizing. This just isn’t what I want in a baby bottom ointment, yet. Tomorrow is Day 5 and the final day so here’s to getting the product I want!

I like the looks of this balm. The golden color really looks nice. How about some Comfrey extract? Comfrey is wonderful for the skin. I use several herbs in my baby bottom skin salve. I will be interested to see how your final product turns out. The experimentation is fun to work with until you have your finished item, I feel. Cindy

I’ve really enjoyed reading your day by day experimenting! I love the fact that lotion and balm making is so easy to tweak. Looking forward to day 5s results!

Increasing the lanolin was a geat idea. Lanolin is a key ingredient in my intensive hand and foot care creams.

I’ve always heard that a lot of people are allergic to lanolin. Is that really true? I’ve always shied away from using it, but I like it!

I love lanolin. I have never met someone who has told me they are allergic. I have heard that “other people” have this allergy but I have never actually met someone who has confirmed they are allergic. For this reason I use lanolin without worry. If you have a concern, label your products clearly.

I just received a sample of this with my order. The color is great, I love it! It felt a little gritty when I first put it on the back of my hand, but it melted in wonderfully and feels silky and smooth. I am imagining this as a foot balm with peppermint essential oil. Very nice, love the color and feel, sinks in nicely and not very greasy at all =) I’ll bet that when you finally get what you are striving for, the end product will be amazing!
